Smart Grid Protection and Substation Automation

CEP 410 delves into the advanced concepts of smart grid protection and substation automation, equipping upper-division undergraduate students with the knowledge and skills necessary for designing, implementing, and maintaining robust electrical infrastructure. The curriculum emphasizes the theoretical foundations of protective relaying, covering fault analysis, device coordination, and various protection philosophies. A significant portion of the course is dedicated to understanding modern communication architectures, specifically exploring the principles and applications of the global standard for communication networks and systems in substations. Furthermore, students will investigate the role of time-synchronized measurements in enhancing grid observability, control, and stability. Through a blend of lectures, practical exercises, and a capstone project, participants will develop a holistic perspective on securing and optimizing next-generation power systems.
