# XRY 120 - Calibration, Quality Assurance & Preventive Maintenance **Credits:** 3 **Term:** 3 ## Course Description This course provides comprehensive training in the calibration, quality assurance, and preventive maintenance of diagnostic X-ray equipment. Students will master essential procedures for ensuring optimal performance, patient safety, and regulatory compliance. Key topics include kVp and mAs accuracy testing, half-value layer determination, timer and automatic exposure control (AEC) verification, and collimator and beam alignment assessments. The curriculum emphasizes the selection and proper use of specialized test tools, development of robust preventive maintenance schedules, and adherence to industry best practices. This course is critical for technicians responsible for maintaining high standards in X-ray imaging facilities. ## Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: * Accurately measure and evaluate X-ray tube voltage (kVp) and tube current-time product (mAs) for diagnostic systems. * Perform half-value layer (HVL) measurements to assess beam quality and filtration, ensuring compliance with radiation safety standards. * Test and verify the accuracy of X-ray exposure timers and automatic exposure control (AEC) systems. * Conduct collimator light field and X-ray beam alignment checks, identifying and correcting discrepancies. * Select, operate, and calibrate specialized test equipment required for X-ray system performance evaluation. * Develop and implement comprehensive preventive maintenance schedules and quality assurance protocols for diagnostic X-ray units. ## Topics by Week * **Week 1:** Introduction to X-ray QA/PM and Test Equipment Fundamentals * **Week 2:** X-ray Tube Voltage (kVp) Accuracy Testing * **Week 3:** X-ray Tube Current-Time Product (mAs) Accuracy Testing * **Week 4:** Half-Value Layer (HVL) Measurement and Filtration Assessment * **Week 5:** X-ray Exposure Timer Accuracy and Reproducibility * **Week 6:** Automatic Exposure Control (AEC) System Calibration and Testing * **Week 7:** Collimator Light Field and X-ray Beam Alignment * **Week 8:** Focal Spot Size Measurement and Image Receptor Contact * **Week 9:** Radiation Output and Dose Rate Measurements * **Week 10:** Digital Radiography (DR) Detector Performance Testing * **Week 11:** Developing Preventive Maintenance Schedules and Documentation * **Week 12:** Troubleshooting Common X-ray System Performance Issues * **Week 13:** Midterm Review * **Week 14:** Final Exam Review ## Grading * Knowledge Checks: 15% * Assignments and Labs: 30% * Quizzes: 25% * Final Exam: 30% ## Policies All assignments must be submitted by the stated deadline.
