Certificate
Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer & Cold Chain Technician
A 12-credit certificate in four courses: refrigeration fundamentals and cascade refrigeration cycles, ultra-low temperature freezer construction and controls, liquid nitrogen and CO2 backup systems and cryogenic safety, and cold chain temperature monitoring, alarms and documentation. Coursework is vendor-neutral. It prepares you for industry practice and does not by itself grant any license or agency certification.
Outcomes
What you will be able to do
- 01Diagnose cascade refrigeration faults
- 02Service ultra-low freezer controls
- 03Maintain cryogenic backup systems safely
- 04Validate monitoring and alarm records
Careers
Where graduates work
- Laboratory equipment technician
- Cold chain service technician
- Scientific refrigeration technician
Curriculum
Term 2
Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer Construction and Control Systems
This course examines the specialized structural engineering, insulation technologies, and electronic control architectures utilized in modern ultra-low temperature refrigeration equipment. Students develop practical competence in evaluating thermal barriers, servicing microprocessor and programmable logic controllers, and troubleshooting electrical control loops.
Cryogenic Backup Systems and Safety in Ultra-Low Temperature Applications
This course provides technicians with specialized knowledge of liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) and liquid carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) auxiliary refrigeration systems designed to protect ultra-low temperature payloads during mechanical cooling failures. Students master cryogenic thermodynamic principles, emergency backup hardware installation, atmospheric gas monitoring, and critical safety protocols for handling pressurized cryogenic fluids.
