MRI Systems: Magnets, RF Coils & Gradient Systems

CTM 110 provides an in-depth exploration of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system core components, essential for biomedical equipment service technicians. This course covers the principles and operational aspects of superconducting magnets, including cryogenics, cryostat design, and critical quench safety protocols. Students will learn about the function and maintenance of radiofrequency (RF) coils, RF transmission and reception chains, and gradient coil systems, including their associated amplifiers and power supplies. The curriculum also details static magnetic field shimming techniques and system calibration. Emphasis is placed on practical service procedures, diagnostic methodologies, and safety considerations specific to high-field MRI environments, preparing technicians for advanced troubleshooting and maintenance tasks.

## Course Description

## Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
* Explain the principles of superconductivity and the design of superconducting MRI magnets, including cryogenics and cryostat components.
* Identify and implement critical safety procedures related to high magnetic fields, cryogen handling, and quench events.
* Describe the function, types, and operational characteristics of RF coils, RF transmitters, and receivers within an MRI system.
* Analyze the operation of gradient coil systems, including gradient amplifiers, and their role in spatial encoding.
* Perform basic diagnostic tests and calibration procedures for MRI magnet homogeneity (shimming) and RF system performance.
* Apply systematic troubleshooting methodologies to common faults in MRI magnet, RF, and gradient subsystems.
