Traffic Signal Fundamentals, Cabinets, and Controllers

This foundational course provides adult technician students with a comprehensive introduction to traffic signal infrastructure, electrical cabinets, and intersection control hardware. Students investigate the underlying electrical and operational principles of contemporary signalized intersections, focusing on standard ring-and-barrier phasing, signal timing parameters, power distribution assemblies, and load switch operation. Field-oriented lessons emphasize safe work practices, electrical schematic reading, wiring termination, and foundational cabinet architecture across prevailing standard equipment formats. Through progressive bench exercises and directed physical assembly, students learn to interpret phase sequences, configure actuated controller timing parameters, verify load switch outputs, and diagnose basic electrical faults. The curriculum directly prepares technicians to perform routine maintenance, interpret diagnostic indicators, and participate safely in field operations alongside senior personnel, while reinforcing the operational logic essential for downstream coursework in detection, conflict monitoring, and advanced transportation systems networking.
