Laser Physics and Laser Safety
LSR 101 introduces the fundamental physics of laser operation, covering concepts such as stimulated emission, gain media, optical resonators, and pumping mechanisms. It explores the interaction of laser wavelengths with biological tissues, distinguishes between continuous wave and pulsed laser delivery, and outlines basic beam delivery systems. A significant portion of the course is dedicated to laser safety, encompassing hazard classification, protective eyewear and optical density, establishment of nominal hazard zones and controlled areas, and the critical role of the Laser Safety Officer. The course also addresses ANSI Z136.3 concepts, fire and plume hazards, and electrical safety pertinent to laser power supplies, preparing technicians for safe and effective service of medical laser systems in a vendor-neutral context.
