Nuclear Medicine Imaging Systems and Radiation Safety
NMI 101 introduces service technicians to the core concepts of nuclear medicine imaging. Students will explore the fundamental architecture and function of gamma cameras, as well as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) systems. A significant portion of the course is dedicated to radiation safety, emphasizing best practices for service staff, including the principles of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). Topics include understanding ionizing radiation, dose limits, shielding, contamination control, and the proper use of radiation survey meters. The course also provides an overview of relevant regulatory considerations for maintaining and servicing these complex imaging devices, ensuring safe and compliant operations without claiming any specific certifications.
