Industrial Network Architecture and the Purdue Model

SEC 101 delves into the fundamental principles governing industrial control networks, crucial for technicians working in modernized industrial settings. The curriculum systematically introduces the Purdue Model, a widely accepted framework for segmenting and securing OT networks, and examines how it applies to real-world industrial operations. Topics include the identification and classification of OT network zones, the various types of physical and logical data conduits used, and the critical importance of accurate asset inventory for both security and operational efficiency. A significant portion of the course is dedicated to dissecting the key differences between information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) environments, preparing students to navigate the unique challenges and requirements of converged systems while maintaining operational integrity and reliability. Hands-on exercises reinforce theoretical concepts, providing practical experience in network analysis and system identification.
